Trade & payments

A payment experiment is not a currency.

Chairs keep asking members to settle more trade in national currencies. That is a real agenda item. It is not the same thing as a BRICS note, a BRICS central bank, or a published intra-BRICS payments volume.

Summit declarations since the mid-2010s have encouraged greater use of local currencies in trade and investment among members. The New Development Bank has also discussed local-currency lending as an institutional goal. None of that, on the public record this desk will cite, equals a single launched BRICS currency or a completed alternative to correspondent-bank dollar rails.

When preview coverage of the 2026 New Delhi summit lists “cross-border payments” and “greater use of national currencies” as focus areas, treat that as agenda language from the chair year — consistent with Rio 2025 and Kazan 2024 — not as evidence that a payment system has already cleared a disclosed volume. We will not invent BRICS Pay user counts, settlement shares, or “percent of trade now outside the dollar.”

What is institutional, and what is still talk

The Contingent Reserve Arrangement (agreed in 2014 alongside the bank) is a swap-style backstop among members, not a daily payments network. Central-bank working groups and finance-minister tracks can study messaging standards, local-currency credit lines, and interoperability. Those tracks produce papers and, sometimes, bilateral pilots. Pilots should be cited to the two finance ministries involved, not generalized to “BRICS has replaced SWIFT.”

Trade policy is still national

BRICS does not set a common external tariff. Members remain in different WTO coalitions, regional trade agreements, and — in several cases — overlapping security relationships with the United States or Europe. A leaders’ paragraph on “resilient supply chains” does not harmonize export controls on semiconductors, oil, or fertilizer.
